Chapter 1
Communication: Mass and other forms
Communication: Mass and other forms
Element of the communication process:
-Encoding:Transmitting the message
-Decoding:Receiving the message
-Feedback
-Noise
i) Encoding:Transmitting the message
-the source initiates the process by having a thought or an idea that he/she wishes to transmit to some other entity.
-the source may or may not have knowledge about the receiver of the message.
-Source can be single individuals, groups, or even organizations.
-Encoding refers to the activities that a source goes through to translate thoughts and ideas into a form that may be perceived by the sense.
-the message is the actual physical product that the source encodes.
-when you talk, your speech is the message. When you write a letter home, what you put on the paper is the message.
-some messages are more under he control of the receiver than others.
-channel are the ways the message travels to the receiver.
-sound waves carry spoken words, light waves carry visual message.
-touch is also a channel. (such a braille).
ii) Decoding:Receiving the message
-is the opposite of the encoding process.
-consists of activities that translate or interpret physical message into a form that has eventual meaning for a receiver.
-the radio is decoder.
-the receiver is the target of the message.
-can be a single person, a group, an institution, or even a large, anonymous collection of people.
iii) feedback
-refers to those responses of the receiver that shape and alter the subsequent messages of the source.
-represents a reversal of the flow of communication.
-the original source becomes the receiver; the original receiver becomes the new source.
-important:
:) allows the source to answer the question ''how am i doing?"
:) allows the receiver to attempt to change some element in the communication process.
-2 different kinds of feedback:
i)positive: usually encourages the communication behavior in progress.
ii)negative: usually attempts to change the communication or even to terminate it.
iv) Noice
-is anything that interferes with the delivery of the message.
-too much noise might prevent the message from reaching its destination.
-3 different types of noise:
:) semantic noise: occurs when different people have different meanings for different words and phrases or when the arrangement of words confuses the meaning.
:) mechanical noise: occurs when there is a problem with a machine that is being used to assist communication.
:) environmental noise: refers to sources of noise that are external to the communication process but that nonetheless interfere with it.
